Online applications are now available for summer camps offered by The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU. These camps are designed to inspire a lifelong love of learning and encourage high-interest and high-ability students to explore their academic passions and develop friendships outside of their regular school classrooms. All camps take place on the campus of Western Kentucky University, and classes are taught by WKU professors and area school teachers. Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students (SCATS) | June 6-18, 2021 Offered every summer since 1983, this two-week residential camp provides a wide range of classes for academically talented students who have been in grades six through eight during the 2020-21 school year. Students take four courses from a wide array of choices. Evenings and weekends give participants the chance to engage in sports, arts, games, and social activities. Applications and more information can be found at https://www.wku.edu/gifted/scats. Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth (VAMPY)| June 20-July 10, 2021 Students who have been in grades seven through ten during the 2020-21 school year qualify for VAMPY by taking the ACT or SAT and scoring at or above the average for college-bound seniors. At this three-week residential program, offered every year since 1984, students spend six hours each day in a challenging academic environment. Evenings and weekends are spent pursuing extracurriculars with other campers. Also, thanks to a grant from Qatar Foundation International, students wishing to study Arabic at VAMPY have the chance to attend camp for free or at a reduced cost. Camp Explore | July 5-9, 2021 The Center for Gifted Studies’ Camp Explore is a one-week day camp designed for students with advanced ability and high interest who were in grades one, two, or three during the 2020-21 school year. The experience features hands-on and minds-on instruction to engage children in learning across a variety of disciplines like language arts, math, science, social studies, theater, and art. Super Saturdays--Winter Edition!

Because Learning Doesn't End on Friday Dates: February 6, 13, & 20, 2021 Place: Online Time: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CT Cost: $80 “Super Saturdays allows me to work with other kids who think like me but differently from me too. It helps me grow.” Abigail Blais 6th grader Super Saturdays encourages students in grades 1 – 6 who are of high ability or have high interest in a topic to pursue their passions outside the regular classroom. Through a minds-on, hands-on approach to learning, students explore and investigate such areas as math, art, science, history, writing, music, and performance under the thoughtful guidance of experienced teachers and in the company of enthusiastic, like-minded peers. Each year, over 1000 students enjoy the benefits of Super Saturdays. The Center offers two, three-week sessions of Super Saturdays each year, the first in the early fall and the second in the winter. Super Saturdays presents young, gifted learners with the opportunity to continue the learning process in a student-centered environment that celebrates learning for the sake of knowledge. It opens new doors of learning at an age when it is absolutely critical to inspire the minds of gifted learners. For articles and photos of past camps, please go to the Super Saturdays page on The Center's blog, Happenings at The Center for Gifted Studies. “Every time I go, I learn new things and I get to make new friends. Future City Opportunity for 4th-8th Grade!

Hello 4th-8th Grade GT Students! Below is an email I received containing information about “Future City”. Please let me know if any of you are interested in participating. Future City is an engineering competition for students in grades 4-8, where students do exactly what the title indicates, design a city of the future. This year, the theme is to design a city on the moon! The work the students will be doing can start now, but the competition culminates in February with a virtual Q and A with our judges. There is an essay component, a presentation, and the building of a scale model. There is something for every type of learner in your group. There are literally hundreds of dollars in prizes available to teams this year. If anyone getting this has been interested in Future City in the past, but travelling to the competition or the lack of time has been inhibiting, this is a great year to give it a shot! Please head to www.futurecity.org to find more information, or you can email me directly at joe.percefull@oldham.kyschools.us and I’m glad to help you get your questions answered. Hope you and your students stay healthy, Joe Percefull Regional Coordinator Future City Kentucky

Hello GT Students! Welcome back to school! Things are going to look a little different this semester, beginning with NTI, but I believe it will be a great year! It is important to start with a good attitude and goals! Some of you may find learning at home easy, while others may find it challenging. Everyone learns differently, and we teachers understand that! We look foward to the day when we can all meet together in person to learn again. For now, let's talk about making goals for success. In a classroom setting, your teachers have a set schedule for activities throughout the day, so learning at home will take planning. I understand that some of you will be able to just tackle any activity you are given, while others like my own child may have to wait for help when I am back from work. Some of you may have a set space where you can learn with ease, while others may struggle to find a quiet space. Take a deep breath. It's going to be okay! I like to set goals for myself with most things I need to get done. You don't have to have a fancy planner! You can use a wall calendar, or even lined paper, but goal setting is important. Start by writing down important dates for Google meets, assignment due dates, and quizzes! Then create a plan to work on your assignments each day. Do the best you can! We are all learning! I have created a Google Classroom for each K-3 Primary Talent Pool, 4-8 GT, and 9-12 GT where we can communicate. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know! April 20-24 NTI Message

Hello my sweet students!

I miss you!  I hope and pray each of you are healthy and doing well!  I also hope that the storms that came through on Easter did minimal damage to your homes and property.  I know some of you may still be without water, even though I think most all electricity and internet/phone has been restored.  Please do not worry about being behind on any activities for me.  The activities I post on here are meant to be extension learning activities (bonus fun).  Some of you may be struggling to keep up with your other classes with NTI work.  I am here to help in any way that I can.  If you have a question or concern, please feel free to email me at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us. If you are just now seeing the Gifted and Talented activities posted on the district website for NTI days, or just now logging onto my blog, you don't need to make anything up.  If you would like to participate in any of the activities, just email me and let me know which was your favorite!  In past weeks, I have given specific activites for each area of GT, but for this week, if you have some extra time, then I challenge you to try the daily activities tab and at least one other activity tab from Hoagies Gifted!
https://www.hoagiesgifted.org/links.htm

This Thursday, I will be participating in a Zoom meeting with some teacher friends in other parts of KY to discuss Gifted Education and Distance Learning.  Next week, I will be busy working on parent updates for the spring semester and end of year GT data for the state.  Stay safe!  Stay well!  We will get through this together!

Happenings

Good morning my sweet students!

Welcome back to NTI Days! There has been so many changes to our regular routine that I wanted to give you a chance to document! What are some things that you are now doing to adjust your learning, and how are you completing lessons with other teachers? Have you been able to slow down and appreciate the little things? I have, and I’ll give you some examples. We have been playing outside more, stopping to smell the flowers—lilacs are my favorite, singing and playing instruments, ordering groceries through an app, fishing, building, gardening, more cooking at home, and learning how to sew a face mask. I will be posting more NTI activities in the days ahead, please be sure to stop by and check them out! Stay safe at home! Stay well!

Friday, March 27, 2020

Greetings to my students!

I miss each of you! I hope everything is going okay with your NTI work for each class! If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me at: sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us. Send me some pictures of you learning on your NTI Days.  Stay well!

High School GT Activity: Sacco and Vanzetti

Good morning!  I just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing on Week 2 of our NTI Days!  I had so many plans for fun activities that we would be doing at your school during this time, but COVID-19 had other plans.  I had promised my high school students that we would be participating in a reenactment and investigation of the of the historical 1921 court case of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Since we can't be together, do some research.  Who were Sacco and Vanzetti? What was the alleged crime and where did it take place?  Who was involved?  Were they tried fairly?  What was the Red Scare? If you could go back in time and be a member of the jury, what would you have done differently?  Post your comments below or email me your answers at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.

This post will be the only one posted specifically for Week 2 of the NTI Days for Math, Science, and Social Studies, Leadership, General Intellectual, Creativity, and Visual/Performing Arts. Remember that English/Language Arts has its own thread for Week 1 & 2!  When you complete a lesson, please, please tell me your favorite thing about that lesson at the bottom of this thread!

*Since GT is an additional education service, please complete your required assignments with your classroom teachers before completing these!  My activities are geared specifically for Gifted and Talented students and will be optional!*

I'll be checking back each day to see which link you chose!  If you have any questions, please email me at: sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.

Want to go on a Virtual Field Trip? You can!

Good afternoon!

I just received this email from the Kentucky Historical Society!  Please read below and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to take a virtual field on Tuesday and/or Thursday in the coming week!  Have fun!

Although the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is currently closed to onsite visitors, we have ramped up our digital programming to meet our mission of educating and engaging the public through Kentucky history.

For an easy way to find our online resources, please visit our “Virtual Visitor” page on our website, here. This is a one-stop location for our virtual field trips, videos, media links, activities, research catalogs, and more.

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. we are also offering virtual tours of our campus and exhibit spaces on KHS’s Facebook page. Students can ask questions in real time in the comments section, which are answered live by staff who are leading the tours.

A 4th grade teacher from Northern Kentucky recently had her class tune in to one of our virtual tours of the Old State Capitol.

“THEY LOVED IT!” she wrote us. “Thank you so much for doing this and providing a different and interactive activity for them to do while we are all doing our school work at home. The shoutouts and answered questions got the students so excited, and I cannot wait to set it up again next Tuesday and Thursday. The parents really appreciate it as well. Thanks!”

If you or your students need help with a research topic, our library staff are available to help with online research and reference requests from Tuesday through Saturday. For requests, please call the KHS reference desk at (502) 782-8080 or email them at khsrefdesk@ky.gov.

Also, if you're researching 19th century history, don't forget to check out our Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition!

These are just a few of the ways that KHS is meeting the challenges faced by the coronavirus. We are continuing to expand virtual access to our programs and services, so stay tuned to our new initiatives by visiting our websitehistory.ky.gov, or by connecting with our social media platforms.

Thank you!
