April 20-24 NTI Message
I miss you! I hope and pray each of you are healthy and doing well! I also hope that the storms that came through on Easter did minimal damage to your homes and property. I know some of you may still be without water, even though I think most all electricity and internet/phone has been restored. Please do not worry about being behind on any activities for me. The activities I post on here are meant to be extension learning activities (bonus fun). Some of you may be struggling to keep up with your other classes with NTI work. I am here to help in any way that I can. If you have a question or concern, please feel free to email me at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us. If you are just now seeing the Gifted and Talented activities posted on the district website for NTI days, or just now logging onto my blog, you don't need to make anything up. If you would like to participate in any of the activities, just email me and let me know which was your favorite! In past weeks, I have given specific activites for each area of GT, but for this week, if you have some extra time, then I challenge you to try the daily activities tab and at least one other activity tab from Hoagies Gifted!
https://www.hoagiesgifted.org/links.htm
This Thursday, I will be participating in a Zoom meeting with some teacher friends in other parts of KY to discuss Gifted Education and Distance Learning. Next week, I will be busy working on parent updates for the spring semester and end of year GT data for the state. Stay safe! Stay well! We will get through this together!

If you have any questions, please email me at: sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.

Happenings
Good morning my sweet students!
Welcome back to NTI Days! There has been so many changes to our regular routine that I wanted to give you a chance to document! What are some things that you are now doing to adjust your learning, and how are you completing lessons with other teachers? Have you been able to slow down and appreciate the little things? I have, and I’ll give you some examples. We have been playing outside more, stopping to smell the flowers—lilacs are my favorite, singing and playing instruments, ordering groceries through an app, fishing, building, gardening, more cooking at home, and learning how to sew a face mask. I will be posting more NTI activities in the days ahead, please be sure to stop by and check them out! Stay safe at home! Stay well!

High School GT Activity: Sacco and Vanzetti
Since we can't be together, do some research. Who were Sacco and Vanzetti? What was the alleged crime and where did it take place? Who was involved? Were they tried fairly? What was the Red Scare? If you could go back in time and be a member of the jury, what would you have done differently? Post your comments below or email me your answers at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.

Want to go on a Virtual Field Trip? You can!
Good afternoon!
I just received this email from the Kentucky Historical Society! Please read below and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to take a virtual field on Tuesday and/or Thursday in the coming week! Have fun!
Although the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is currently closed to onsite visitors, we have ramped up our digital programming to meet our mission of educating and engaging the public through Kentucky history.
For an easy way to find our online resources, please visit our “Virtual Visitor” page on our website, here. This is a one-stop location for our virtual field trips, videos, media links, activities, research catalogs, and more.
Every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. we are also offering virtual tours of our campus and exhibit spaces on KHS’s Facebook page. Students can ask questions in real time in the comments section, which are answered live by staff who are leading the tours.
A 4th grade teacher from Northern Kentucky recently had her class tune in to one of our virtual tours of the Old State Capitol.
“THEY LOVED IT!” she wrote us. “Thank you so much for doing this and providing a different and interactive activity for them to do while we are all doing our school work at home. The shoutouts and answered questions got the students so excited, and I cannot wait to set it up again next Tuesday and Thursday. The parents really appreciate it as well. Thanks!”
If you or your students need help with a research topic, our library staff are available to help with online research and reference requests from Tuesday through Saturday. For requests, please call the KHS reference desk at (502) 782-8080 or email them at khsrefdesk@ky.gov.
Also, if you're researching 19th century history, don't forget to check out our Civil War Governors of Kentucky Digital Documentary Edition!
These are just a few of the ways that KHS is meeting the challenges faced by the coronavirus. We are continuing to expand virtual access to our programs and services, so stay tuned to our new initiatives by visiting our website, history.ky.gov, or by connecting with our social media platforms.
Thank you!

NTI Weeks 1 & 2 English Language Arts
(Lisa Van Gemert--The Gifted Guru)
I am missing my students this morning, but more than anything I want all of us to be safe and healthy during these NTI days! I have some great activities that I think you would enjoy! The activities that I am posting for English Language Arts will be from my favorite Gifted Education speaker, Mrs. Lisa Van Gemert--The Gifted Guru! She travels the world speaking in conferences on behalf of Gifted and Talented, and implementing creativity into daily lessons. Best of all, I've seen and heard her in person at the 2017 KAGE Conference in Lexington, KY! You can follow her daily lessons from the YouTube link that I have placed at the bottom of this post--click on Mrs. Van's English Class! I will also post a link at the bottom of the post for the daily stories that will be used and hyperlinked with the text for those lessons!
This post will be the only one posted specifically for English Language Arts, so if you are GT Language Arts or just love to read, use this same post daily! When you complete a lesson, please, please tell me your favorite thing about that lesson at the bottom of this thread!

NTI Days Announcement!
Welcome back GT students! It’s been a while since I have used this format, but I hope it will be a useful tool for sending you some great GT activities for grades 5-12, for the NTI days ahead. I will be posting new activities daily from my favorite GT activity sites! You can communicate with me through this blog, or you can email me at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.
Just a reminder to parents of fourth grade students, I am still in the process of testing some of the students that were in the Primary Talent Pool in grades K-3, and will be in committee meetings at each school to determine placement for those fourth grade students that have met qualifications for the Gifted and Talented program. I will send home further information once meetings are complete.

Please check out this info on Summer Camp Opportunities at WKU for grades 6-10!
Now is a perfect time for your students to apply to attend SCATS and VAMPY.
Students arrive at the WKU campus from counties around Kentucky, states across the nation, and countries all over the world to form a community of diverse backgrounds and interests. Thanks to a generous grant from the Qatar Foundation International, The Center is able to offer funding to students interested in studying Arabic at VAMPY. The funding is twofold: 1) up to $2000 to any eligible student: 2) up to the full amount of VAMPY tuition for students demonstrating financial need.

Fiddler On The Roof
What conflicts must Reb Tevye face while still trying to remain faithful to his culture's traditions? Will changing times force him to bend so far in his beliefs that he will break, like the tedious balance of a fiddler on the roof?
Post the answers to your specific GT question here.

Scholarship to learn Arab from Vamp--Please read for more info!
Do you know a 7th-10th grader interested in learning Arabic?
The Qatar Foundation International has awarded a grant to The Center for Gifted Studies that will allow ten students to come to VAMPY to study Arabic this summer.

Advanced students spend six hours a day in a challenging academic environment exploring a subject in which they are interested. Surrounded by their gifted peers, campers engage in a variety of other activities organized by residential counselors in the evenings and on weekends.
More information about VAMPY can be found on our website, www.wku.edu/gifted/vampy.
Students interested in applying for a scholarship to study Arabic should complete the attached scholarship application as well as a VAMPY application, which can be downloaded from our website at http://www.wku.edu/gifted/vampy/vampy-2017-application.pdf.
