High School GT Activity: Sacco and Vanzetti

Good morning!  I just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing on Week 2 of our NTI Days!  I had so many plans for fun activities that we would be doing at your school during this time, but COVID-19 had other plans.  I had promised my high school students that we would be participating in a reenactment and investigation of the of the historical 1921 court case of Sacco and Vanzetti.

Since we can't be together, do some research.  Who were Sacco and Vanzetti? What was the alleged crime and where did it take place?  Who was involved?  Were they tried fairly?  What was the Red Scare? I just received this email from the Kentucky Historical Society!  Please read below and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to take a virtual field on Tuesday and/or Thursday in the coming week!  Have fun!

Although the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is currently closed to onsite visitors, we have ramped up our digital programming to meet our mission of educating and engaging the public through Kentucky history.

For an easy way to find our online resources, please visit our “Virtual Visitor” page on our website, here. This is a one-stop location for our virtual field trips, videos, media links, activities, research catalogs, and more.

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. we are also offering virtual tours of our campus and exhibit spaces on KHS’s Facebook page. Students can ask questions in real time in the comments section, which are answered live by staff who are leading the tours.

A 4^th grade teacher from Northern Kentucky recently had her class tune in to one of our virtual tours of the Old State Capitol.

“THEY LOVED IT!” she wrote us. “Thank you so much for doing this and providing a different and interactive activity for them to do while we are all doing our school work at home. The shoutouts and answered questions got the students so excited, and I cannot wait to set it up again next Tuesday and Thursday. The parents really appreciate it as well. Thanks!”

If you or your students need help with a research topic, our library staff are available to help with online research and reference requests from Tuesday through Saturday. For requests, please call the KHS reference desk at (502) 782-8080 or email them at khsrefdesk@ky.gov.

NTI Weeks 1 & 2 English Language Arts

I am missing my students this morning, but more than anything I want all of us to be safe and healthy during these NTI days!  I have some great activities that I think you would enjoy! The activities that I am posting for English Language Arts will be from my favorite Gifted Education speaker, Mrs. Lisa Van Gemert--The Gifted Guru! She travels the world speaking in conferences on behalf of Gifted and Talented, and implementing creativity into daily lessons.  Best of all, I've seen and heard her in person at the 2017 KAGE Conference in Lexington, KY!   You can follow her daily lessons from the YouTube link that I have placed at the bottom of this post--click on Mrs. Van's English Class!  I will also post a link at the bottom of the post for the daily stories that will be used and hyperlinked with the text for those lessons!

NTI Days Announcement!

Welcome back GT students! It’s been a while since I have used this format, but I hope it will be a useful tool for sending you some great GT activities for grades 5-12, for the NTI days ahead. Just a reminder to parents of fourth grade students, I am still in the process of testing some of the students that were in the Primary Talent Pool in grades K-3, and will be in committee meetings at each school to determine placement for those fourth grade students that have met qualifications for the Gifted and Talented program. I will send home further information once meetings are complete.

Scholarship to learn Arab from Vamp--Please read for more info!

Do you know a 7th-10th grader interested in learning Arabic? The Qatar Foundation International has awarded a grant to The Center for Gifted Studies that will allow ten students to come to VAMPY to study Arabic this summer. VAMPY, the Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth, is a three-week residential program held at Western Kentucky University. Advanced students spend six hours a day in a challenging academic environment exploring a subject in which they are interested. Surrounded by their gifted peers, campers engage in a variety of other activities organized by residential counselors in the evenings and on weekends. Young Women Lead Conference (High School Girls)

Toyota presents the annual Young Women LEAD Conferences in partnership with SOAR and Eastern Kentucky University.  High school young women are invited to join us for this one-day leadership conference designed to inspire these young women to believe in their qualities and strengths, and to challenge them to believe in a higher level of personal growth and development.  

The central Kentucky conference, co-hosted by Eastern Kentucky University, will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2017. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker, Julie Marie Carrier, Emmy-Nominee, award-winning national speaker and author. 

 

Registration will begin January 25, 2017.  It is limited and is first-come, first-served. Lunch will be provided and the cost is FREE!

Winter Parent Updates

Miss Howard will deliver winter parent updates to the schools on December 14th and 15th. 

SAGES-2 Assessment Results!

Grading of each fourth grade SAGES-2 (Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students) is now complete and results will be discussed at each of the upcoming principal meetings this month!  A committee meeting will be scheduled by each principal.  After the committee meeting, a parent permission form will be sent home with a copy of the GSSP form (Gifted Student Service Form).  The parent must sign and return all paperwork before his/her child can be officially placed in and serviced by the Gifted Education program.  If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Howard at sarah.howard@perry.kyschools.us.

Author visit to PCC

Award winning author Tonya Moreland spoke with G/T Language Arts students on Friday, November 18th.  Students learned about the importance of revision, steps of the publishing process, and were encouraged in their own writing.  Mrs. Moreland also read both of her children's books to the group.  She is currently writing a third book that will appeal to young boys.

Award Winning Author To Visit Perry County Schools

Tonya Moreland

Award winning author, Tonya Moreland will be visiting each of the Perry County Schools in a Gifted Education residency for students in 4-12 GT and K-3 PTP.  Mrs. Moreland is currently resides in Corbin, KY where she has made a home with her husband and two beautiful daughters.  She has published two successful books in her seriously sweet series to date, "When Am I Beautiful" and "Who Will I Marry?" Mrs. Moreland is curently in the writing stages of her third book, "When Will I Be a Man?" Check back later for photos from her visit!

Social Studies Residency at Buckhorn High School

Ron Howard spoke with G/T Social Studies students at Buckhorn High School on Tuesday, November 1st about the election process.  Howard is a graduate of Alice Lloyd College with a degree in History/Pre-Law.  He is also a former member of a national campaign team, as well as a former policy analyst for southeastern Kentucky.  Students were able to relate to Mr. Howard because he grew up in Perry County, attended Buckhorn  as a freshman and graduated from PCCHS.  He currently lives in Spartanburg, SC with his wife Kinsee.
